Give a Fairy Tale a Twist
Take a story everyone knows and make it brand new. It's a great way to practise!
Retelling a fairy tale is like remixing a song. Everyone knows the tune, but you add your own style! It's great practice because the plot is already there for you to play with.
Five ways to twist a tale
- Swap the hero and villain: the big bad wolf tells his side of the story.
- Change the setting: Cinderella in a space station, or at a football tournament.
- Change the ending: what if Goldilocks and the bears became best friends?
- Mix two tales: Jack's beanstalk grows right up to Rapunzel's tower!
- Make it modern: Little Red Riding Hood takes a scooter and has a mobile phone.
Look, I'll be honest. I had a terrible cold that week. All I wanted was to borrow a cup of sugar for my honey-lemon tea. Was it my fault that every time I sneezed, a pig's house fell down?
See how telling the story from the wolf's point of view makes it funny and completely new? Same story, totally different feel.
Once upon a time, on the moon base Lunara 7, there lived a girl named Cinder who fixed rocket engines. Her stepsisters never let her go to the Galactic Ball, but they hadn't counted on her robot godmother.
